A Genie cable and drum replacement in Henderson typically runs $130 to $250 installed, and our truck carries Genie-compatible cables and drums for most residential models so we can usually finish the job the same day you call. The cable is the steel wire that runs from the drum at the top of the door down to the bottom bracket, and it does the heavy lifting alongside the springs every time the door moves. When it frays, snaps, or jumps the drum, the door jams crooked or slams down on one side, and that is a call we answer 24/7 because a door hanging on one cable is a hazard. Most homeowners find out the hard way: a loud snap, the door lurching sideways, or a visible birds-nest of wire near the top of the track.
Which Genie Models This Applies To
We stock cables and drums that fit the Genie residential lines you are most likely to have in a Henderson home: the IntelliG, TriloG, SilentMax, ChainMax, and Excelerator series, plus the older screw-drive models that are still common in Green Valley Ranch and Anthem. The compatibility gotcha is this: Genie changed drum geometry across product generations, so a drum from an Excelerator will not sit correctly on a TriloG shaft even if it looks close. The cable length is not the only spec that matters. Drum radius, cable groove pitch, and shaft diameter all have to match, or the cable stacks unevenly and shreds itself within months. You can identify your model on a label near the opener rail or on the back panel of the door, and if that label is gone, we measure the drum diameter and cable length on site. For owners who want original equipment, we can order Genie-labeled parts. Most of the time, we install a quality aftermarket equivalent that matches the OEM drum and cable spec exactly, because it gets the door running today instead of in ten business days.
We are an independent service provider, not a Genie dealer, and we are not affiliated with the Genie brand. That independence is part of why we stock parts for multiple manufacturers, including LiftMaster and Chamberlain, so we can match whatever is on your ceiling.

Signs Your Genie Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door hangs crooked or binds on one side. When one cable frays and stretches, that side drops out of sync with the other, and the door scrapes or jams in the track.
- A visible fray or unraveling strand near the drum. Steel cable under garage-door tension does not heal. Once you see a broken strand, the rest of the cable is on borrowed time, and in Henderson’s dry heat, older cables lose their internal lubrication and become brittle faster.
- A loud snap followed by a door that slams or refuses to lift. That is a full cable break. The door may still move if the springs are active, but the load is now unbalanced, and running it even once more can bend the track or pull the drum off the shaft.
- The cable has jumped out of the drum groove and wrapped around the shaft. Drums wear at the groove edges over time, especially on doors that cycle four or five times a day. Once the groove is wallowed out, the cable will not stay seated no matter how carefully it is rewound.
- A grinding or scraping noise at the top of the door during travel. That is often the drum rubbing against the bearing plate or the cable rubbing against itself after it has begun to stack unevenly. Left alone, the friction point becomes a snap point.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Henderson, expect to pay $130 to $250 for a Genie cable and drum replacement, parts and labor included. The range is driven by three things: whether we are replacing one assembly or both, which drum style your Genie uses, and whether the bottom bracket or bearing plate also took damage when the cable let go.
- Single cable replacement: $130 to $180
- Single drum and cable replacement: $160 to $250
- Pair of cables and drums (recommended when both are original): $200 to $250
We give you a written price before any work begins, and that number does not change once we are on the job. Replacing one side now is sometimes the right call if the other side is in good shape, but when both cables are the same age, replacing both keeps the door lifting evenly. Every Genie cable and drum replacement we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cable stacks wrong or the drum loosens within the year, we come back and make it right, no negotiation required.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely inspect a cable without touching anything under tension. Stand inside the garage with the door closed, look up at the drums on either end of the shaft, and check for frayed wires, rust, or a cable that is not sitting flush in its groove. That is where DIY should stop. The cable on a Genie door runs under full spring tension, and the springs hold more than enough force to break a hand or worse if the tension releases while you are working on it. A cable that looks slack may actually be under load at a different point in the travel. We have also seen well-meaning attempts to re-seat a jumped cable end with the door half-open, which is about the most dangerous position it can be in. The honest advice: check it, take a photo, and call (775) 458-7045. We will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a quick fix or a full replacement, and we won’t send anyone out for a job you don’t need.
FAQs
In Henderson’s dry climate, original Genie cables typically last 10 to 14 years before fatigue or fraying shows up. Drums often outlast the first set of cables, and we rarely replace a drum that is under ten years old unless the cable failure damaged its groove. Doors that cycle many times daily, like the one you use for the main car, wear faster, and the heat accelerates lubrication breakdown in the cable strands.
No. Steel garage door cable cannot be spliced or repaired safely. Once strands break, the cable’s load rating is compromised, and putting it back under spring tension is a failure waiting to happen. The repair is replacement, and it is cheaper than the damage a snapped cable causes to the track or to a car parked underneath. Call (775) 458-7045 and we will get you an exact price over the phone.
Most single-door cable and drum replacements take 45 to 90 minutes once we are on site. If both sides need work or the bottom bracket needs replacing, plan on up to two hours. We carry Genie spec cables and drums on the truck, so there is rarely a second trip.
We carry Genie-compatible cables and drums for the most common residential models on the truck every day, which is why most Henderson jobs are done in one visit. For less common Genie configurations, we source the correct drum spec from our parts suppliers and usually have it within one to two business days, and we will tell you before you book if that is the case.
