LiftMaster cable and drum replacement in Henderson typically runs $130 – $250 installed, and we carry compatible cables and drums on our trucks so most jobs are finished in one visit. The cable is the braided steel line that runs from the bottom bracket up to the drum at the top of the shaft – and the drum is the grooved spool that winds it. Here’s the short version: if your LiftMaster door hangs crooked, makes a grinding sound near the top, or one side sits an inch lower than the other, the cable has likely frayed, snapped, or jumped the drum. Left alone, the door keeps pulling unevenly and the damage spreads to rollers, hinges, and the opener itself. Jesse Calder has seen it enough times across Henderson driveways to say it plainly: a cable issue never fixes itself, but it’s also one of the most straightforward repairs we do.
Which LiftMaster Models This Applies To
We replace cables and drums on LiftMaster’s full residential range – the 41A series, the 8010 and 8155 chain drive openers, the 8365W, the 8500W and 98022 wall-mounted jackshaft models, plus the older 1245R, 1255R, and 2245R units still running in a lot of Henderson garages. The part that matters most is the drum itself. LiftMaster doors built in the last 15 years generally use a 4-inch tapered drum on standard 7-foot doors and a longer taper on 8-foot doors, and the cable diameter is either 3/32-inch or 1/8-inch depending on door weight. You’ll find the model number on a label attached to the opener rail, not the door – that’s a detail plenty of people miss. When we arrive, we match the drum taper and cable length to your specific door weight and track radius, not just the opener model. For older LiftMaster pre-2005 doors, we often recommend OEM-spec replacement parts because the aftermarket equivalents don’t always seat correctly in the original drum slots. On newer units, we’ve had consistently good results with aftermarket cables and drums built to LiftMaster’s taper spec – and we’ll tell you which one makes sense for your door and why before we touch anything.

Signs Your LiftMaster Cable & Drum Replacement Is Failing
- The door hangs visibly uneven or one side sits lower when closed. One cable has stretched or begun to fray, so that side isn’t carrying its half of the weight anymore.
- You hear a metallic scrape or grinding near the top of the tracks when the door moves. The cable has jumped out of the drum groove and is riding against the drum flange or the bearing plate.
- The door jerks or shudders partway up, then levels out. The drum is worn on one edge and the cable is slipping in and out of the groove as it winds.
- You can see loose strands or a kink in the steel cable. That’s the failure already underway – a cable with broken strands will snap under tension, usually when the door is moving and a car or person is nearby.
- The door reverses suddenly or the opener strains near the top of travel. A worn drum changes the effective weight the opener feels, forcing the motor to work harder and tripping the force sensor.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Cable replacement on a LiftMaster door in Henderson runs $130 – $250, and the price includes both the new cable and drum set, labor, and a written price handed to you before any work starts. Where your job lands in that range depends on a few things: whether it’s a single cable or the matched pair (we replace both when one has failed, because the other is the same age), whether the drum needs to be replaced or can be re-grooved, and whether your door is a 7-foot or 8-foot height. Some Henderson homes out toward Green Valley Ranch have custom track radius setups that need a longer cable length – that’s the upper end of the range. The price is the price: we quote it, you approve it, and the number doesn’t change once we’re on the job. Every cable and drum replacement we install is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise – if it’s not done right, we make it right, no negotiation required.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely check the visible cable on both sides of the door, look for frayed strands, and inspect whether the cable is seated in the drum groove. That’s worth doing – it tells you which side has failed and gives us a head start on the phone. What you shouldn’t do is attempt the replacement yourself. The cables on a LiftMaster door run through springs that are under enormous tension – enough to break bone or worse if the cable snaps during removal or the drum releases unexpectedly. That’s not a warning to pressure you, it’s just what the physics are. If you can see a frayed cable or a cable off the drum, call us at (775) 458-7045. We’ll schedule a time that works around your family, show up with the parts on the truck, and hand you a written price before we loosen a single bolt.
FAQs
Most LiftMaster cables in Henderson last 7 – 10 years, though the desert heat and dry air here can cause the steel to lose flexibility sooner, particularly on west-facing garage doors that sit in the hottest part of the afternoon sun. If your door is over 10 years old and one cable has failed, the other is likely close behind – that’s why we replace both as a matched set. Call (775) 458-7045 and we’ll tell you what we’re seeing on your specific door.
A frayed cable always has to be replaced – once strands start breaking, the cable’s strength is compromised and no repair will restore it. The drum can sometimes be re-grooved if the wear is minor, but most of the time we replace the drum along with the cable so both components wear evenly from day one. We’ll show you the old parts and explain what we saw before we recommend a course of action.
Most LiftMaster cable and drum replacements in Henderson take 60 – 90 minutes from start to finish, including a full cycle test and lubrication of the rollers and hinges. We bring the parts on the truck, so there’s no second trip unless your door has a custom configuration we need to order for. You’ll get a photo of the clean-up before we leave, every time.
Yes – we carry 3/32-inch and 1/8-inch LiftMaster-compatible cables, 4-inch tapered drums, and the older drum styles on every truck that rolls out to Henderson. We also stock parts for Chamberlain and Genie doors if you have a second door in the garage that needs work. If your LiftMaster needs a part we don’t have on hand, we’ll order it and come back – but that’s uncommon for cable and drum work.
